Understand the notice

Property owners receive an annual notice for January to December. The anticipated 2026 mailing date was May 20, with payment due July 2. New owners remain responsible even if the notice did not arrive.

A Home Owner Grant must be claimed separately through the province, even if the account already has a credit. An unclaimed eligible grant amount can still attract a late penalty.

Choose a payment method

Banks can pay property taxes and utilities, but they must be separate payment items. The tax reference appears below the notice’s mailing address in a format like 1234-56789; individual banks differ on including the dash.

City Hall takes cash, cheque and Interac. The city does not accept credit cards for taxes or utilities. Use a bank payment, cheque, mortgage arrangement or the city payment routes rather than assuming the business-licence card service applies to taxes.

Moving, balances and assessment

If you own the property on the due date, arrange payment of the whole notice and let the lawyer or notary allocate buyer/seller adjustments. Update the bank payee account reference when moving and cancel old prepayments.

BC Assessment, not the city, determines assessed value. Questions or assessment appeals go to BC Assessment at 1-866-825-8322. Tax balance and payment questions go to Finance on 604-792-9498.
